Bradenton Florida History
In 1539 Hernando DeSoto, the Spanish conqueror landed at the current site of DeSoto National Memorial, at the mouth of the Manatee River and began his 4000 mile search for El Dorado, the lost city of gold. He passed on, leaving large settlements of native Americans as the only inhabitants of the gulf coast.
The first Bradenton area settler was Josiah Gates, who came for the offer of free land from the United States government, after the Florida Territories were accepted as part of the United States. Also in the mid-1800's, Joseph Braden arrived, a sugar planter for whom the city was named. By 1855, sugar plantations lined the river and homesteaders started the town of Manatee, also naming the new county Manatee. A small frame courthouse that dates from 1860 and governed the county is now a part of the Manatee Village Historical Park. The arrival of the railroad boomed the port town. The area today remains a center of agriculture featuring tomatoes, cut flowers and home of Tropicana, the world's largest juice producer.
